How a physio can work with your Golf Pro to Fix a Stiff Hip: The Secret Partnership for a Better Swing

You’ve spent hundreds on the latest driver. You’ve had six lessons to fix that persistent slice. You’re practicing at Frilford Heath or Hinksey Heights every weekend. But the ball still isn't going where you want, and your lower back is starting to scream by the 14th hole. You need to understand the what the how and the why, what are you doing wrong, how are you doing the movement and why are doing doing it.

If this sounds familiar, you might be trying to solve a hardware problem with a software update.

In the world of golf, your Golf Pro is the software engineer—they give you the instructions (the swing mechanics). But as a Physiotherapist, I am the hardware specialist. If your "hardware" (your joints and muscles) is locked or weak, no amount of coaching can force your body to perform the move your Pro is asking for. This is why the partnership between golf pro and physio is so important.

The Biomechanical Assessment: Finding the "Why"

When you come into our Witney clinic (Hardwick) for a Golf Biomechanical Assessment, we aren't just looking at where it hurts. We are looking at how your body moves through the three planes of a golf swing.

A golfer’s body requires a unique "Mobile-Stable" alternating pattern:

  • Mobile Ankles to allow weight shift.

  • Stable Knees to take the torque.

  • Mobile Hips to clear the way for the club.

  • Stable Core to protect the spine.

  • Mobile Mid-Back (Thoracic Spine) to create that big, powerful turn.

If you have a "Hardware Block"—for example, a stiff mid-back—your body will find the range of motion somewhere else. Usually, it "steals" it from your lower back. That isn’t a swing fault; it’s a physical limitation.

The Partnership: Working with Your Golf Pro

I often tell my patients: "I don’t want to teach you how to play golf; I want to give you a body that CAN play golf."

This is where the partnership with your local Club Pro becomes powerful. A Pro might tell you: "You need more shoulder turn." You try to do it, but you can’t. You end up "lifting" the club or swaying. The Pro sees the fault, but they can’t fix the fact that your thoracic spine is physically stuck.

How we work as a team:

  1. The Pro identifies the swing fault: (e.g., "Early Extension" or "Loss of Posture").

  2. The Physio identifies the physical cause: (e.g., "Glute weakness" or "Limited hip internal rotation").

  3. The Fix: I work on unlocking that hip and strengthening the glute in the clinic.

  4. The Result: You go back to your Pro, and suddenly, you can hold your posture effortlessly. The coaching "clicks" because the physical barrier is gone.

Beyond Injury: Gaining the "Free" Yards

Biomechanical assessments aren't just for when you're in pain. They are the fastest way to increase swing speed.

Power in golf is generated through Separation—the ability to turn your shoulders while your hips stay stable (and vice versa). If you are "blocky" and move as one unit, you’re leaving 20+ yards on the fairway. By improving your biomechanics, we increase your "X-Factor stretch," giving you more power without you having to "swing harder."

The best swing is not the same for every golfer, but to get the most efficient swing the golfer needs to understand what their physical limitations are and how to improve them to get their best swing.

Stop Fighting Your Body

If you are frustrated with your progress or tired of "Oxfordshire Turf Wrist" and back aches, it’s time to look at the hardware.

We want to get you moving efficiently. By combining expert coaching with a body that is physically capable of the task, you’ll find that golf becomes a lot easier—and a lot more fun.
