Local Clubs
Dr Zo welcomes patients from facilities and clubs in Abingdon such as the following:
Frilford Heath Golf Club

Frilford Heath members can reach us in under 15 minutes. Drive past the club, stay on the A415 through Kingston Bagpuize, and you're at our Hardwick clinic with zero town-center traffic.
"The Golf Movement Screen", having trouble getting the best out of your swing, don't understand what is holding you back, let us assess you to capitalise on your golf training from your coach. Don't wait for a tear to stop your season. We offer a comprehensive biomechanical screen for golfers to identify "power leaks" and injury risks before they strike.
"Whether you've picked up a 'turf-jarring' wrist injury on the Blue Course or you're struggling with back stiffness by the 14th hole of the Red, we specialise in biomechanics and sports injury which can help get Frilford members back to a pain-free swing."
The "Right-Sided" Lower Back Ache
Golfers often feel a sharp pinch or a dull ache on the right side of their lower spine (for right-handed players) during the follow-through.
The Cause: "Hanging back" or "Reverse Spine Angle." If the golfer doesn't shift their weight to the left properly, they compress the facet joints on the right side of the spine under high velocity.
The Symptom: Pain when standing up straight after a long drive or stiffness when getting out of the car after 18 holes.

"Lead" Shoulder Impingement (Left Shoulder)
Frilford’s long courses require big drives. Do you have a deep ache in the front or side of your lead shoulder?
The Cause: Lack of thoracic (mid-back) rotation. If the mid-back is stiff, the golfer forces the shoulder to over-stretch to reach the top of the backswing, "pinching" the rotator cuff tendons.
The Symptom: Pain at the very top of the backswing or difficulty lifting the arm to put on a jacket in the clubhouse.

The "Oxfordshire Turf" Wrist (Lead Wrist)
Frilford Heath is known for its beautiful but sometimes firm heathland turf. Do you get sudden pain in the lead wrist or thumb?
The Cause: "Fat" shots or "jarring." Hitting the ground before the ball transmits a massive shockwave through the club into the lead wrist, causing tendonitis or small ligament sprains (specifically De Quervain's).
The Symptom: Sharp pain upon impact or weakness when trying to grip the club firmly.

Medial & Lateral Epicondylitis (Golfers & Tennis Elbow)
Pain on either side of the elbow?
The Cause: Inside (Golfers): Usually the trail arm (right) from "clutching" the club too hard at the bottom of the swing. Outside (Tennis): Usually the lead arm (left) from over-extending the elbow at impact.
The Symptom: A burning sensation when shaking hands or a loss of "feel" in the short game because they you cant trust your grip.

Lead Knee "Grinding"
Because of the rotational force required to clear the hips, the lead knee takes a lot of torque.
The Cause: Restricted hip mobility. If the hip doesn't rotate, the knee is forced to "twist" to compensate. Over time, this wears down the meniscus.
The Symptom: An audible "click" or swelling after a round, especially when walking the undulating parts of the Red or Blue courses.

Tilsley Park Athletes & Radley / Abingdon AC

If you are training on the track or the 3G pitches at Tilsley Park, you need a clinician who understands explosive power and running mechanics. We are a straight 15-20 minute drive down the A415—faster than crossing Abingdon during school rush hour.
Whether you are clocking laps at Tilsley Park, training for the Abingdon Marathon, or a regular at the Abingdon parkrun, a nagging injury doesn't just slow you down—it keeps you off the tarmac.
At Dr Zo the Physio, we don't just treat symptoms; we analyze your movement to find the "Why" behind the injury. From stubborn shin splints to complex ACL returns, we provide the elite-level care required to get you back to your PB pace.
The Explosive Group (Sprinters & Jumpers)
Hamstring Strains: The most common "acute" complaint. Usually occurs during the transition from the drive phase to upright sprinting.
The Resolution: We move beyond basic stretching. We use Eccentric Loading (Nordic protocols) to strengthen the muscle while it is lengthening—exactly where sprinters tear. We also assess pelvic tilt to ensure your hamstrings aren't being "over-lengthened" before you even start your sprint.

Achilles Tendinopathy: Often caused by the high-tension demands of wearing spikes on the Tilsley track.
The Resolution: Transitioning out of spikes temporarily to manage load, followed by a Heavy Slow Resistance (HSR) program. This "remodels" the tendon fibers so they can handle the high-tension "spring" required for track work.

"Jumper’s Knee" (Patellar Tendonitis): A frequent issue for the Radley AC jump squads due to the massive deceleration forces on the hard landing mats.
The Resolution: We implement Isometric Loading to reduce immediate pain, followed by a focus on Quad and Glute power. We ensure your "landing mechanics" are corrected so your hips and ankles absorb the shock, rather than your knee joint.

The Endurance Group (Distance & Middle Distance)
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints): Often complained about by athletes moving from cross-country season back onto the harder track surface in spring.
The Resolution: A combination of Gait Analysis (to check for over-striding) and Soleus (calf) strengthening. Most shin splints are caused by weak calves forcing the bone to take too much load. We build the "buffer" your shins need.

Stress Fractures (Tibia & Metatarsals): A high-level concern for high-mileage runners who are "training through" pain.
The Resolution: Immediate load management and review. We create a "Return to Run" ladder that uses incremental bone loading, ensuring you don't re-fracture the moment you step back on the Tilsley track.

IT Band Syndrome: Lateral knee pain that flares up during the repetitive loops of track sessions or long runs out toward Radley/Sunningwell.
The Resolution: We stop "rolling" the ITB (which is often ineffective) and start strengthening the Hip Abductors (Glute Medius). By stabilizing the pelvis, we stop the ITB from "rubbing" against the knee during those repetitive track loops.

The Multi-Sport Group (Hockey & Football at Tilsley)
Ankle Sprains: Common on the 3G pitches and water-based hockey turf due to the high-friction surface and sudden changes of direction.
The Resolution: Proprioceptive (balance) retraining. Once the ligament heals, the "brain-to-ankle" connection is often sluggish. We use agility drills that mimic the high-friction turns of the Tilsley 3G pitches to prevent the "re-roll."

ACL & Meniscus Tears: The "dreaded" Tilsley injury. These athletes need a very specific return-to-play protocol that involves moving from your clinic back to the pitch.
The Resolution: A structured Phase-Based Rehab. We bridge the gap between NHS basic physio and elite sport. This includes assessment to ensure limb symmetry with equal loading and sports-specific cutting drills before we clear you for match play.

Groin Strains (Adductor Tendinopathy): From the repetitive lateral lunging required in high-level hockey.
The Resolution: The Copenhagen Adductor Program. We strengthen the inner thigh in functional, sport-specific positions. We also check Hip Internal Rotation—if your hips are tight, your groin has to overwork to turn you on the pitch.

We see a high volume of athletes who struggle with track-surface related injuries like Achilles Tendinopathy and Shin Splints. If your training at for Abingdon AC and Radley AC is being sidelined by a nagging hamstring strain or knee pain, our specialist gait analysis and loading programs are designed to get you back to the track faster.
